Crypto checkout: what we learned in the first 60 days
Conversion, refund rate, support load. The numbers nobody publishes, here.
We added BTC, ETH, USDT (TRC20 + ERC20) checkout in February. Here’s what 60 days of data look like.
Volume: 18% of all new orders are now crypto. We expected 5%. The split is roughly 60% USDT (mostly TRC20 for the low fees), 25% BTC, 15% ETH.
Conversion: crypto orders have a 12% higher complete-to-activate rate than card orders. This makes sense — the kind of customer who has crypto wallets set up has already pre-committed by the time they hit the page.
Refunds: crypto refunds run at 2.1%, against 5.4% for cards. Same explanation: less impulse buying.
Support load: roughly 1 in 15 crypto orders generates a support ticket about “the payment hasn’t credited yet”. The blockchain takes 1-15 minutes to confirm depending on the chain. We added a status page that polls the blockchain explorer for each order; support tickets for stuck payments dropped 80%.
The most surprising finding: crypto orders skew older, not younger. Median age of crypto buyers is 38. Median for card buyers is 32. People with crypto setups already have crypto setups because they’ve been doing this for years.
